EXCELth Workplace Wellness Program

On February 5, 2010, National Wear Red Day, many EXCELth employees gathered at the corporate office for the EXCELth Workplace Wellness activity. This year’s program featured a heart healthy breakfast and presentations by EXCELth staff members. Wylea Winfrey, MN, CNS discussed health risks and Marjorie Brooks, LPN shared how she incorporates exercise during the workday.  Also, staff members made pledges for healthy actions they wanted to achieve by the end of 2010. The activity goals were simple, achievable, holistic and centered around six themes: Physical Activity; Emotional Health; Healthy Eating; Healthy Weight; Healthy Assessments and Spiritual Health.  Two days before the Super Bowl with  sounds of “Who Dat?” reverberating throughout the city,  the wellness event ended with the group singing EXCELth’s own  “ Who Dat?” refrain,  “ Who Dat? Say they going to be healthy? EXCELth! EXCELth!”

Shortly afterwards, when staff members noticed that no one seemed focused on their wellness pledges, a group gathered to discuss ways that they could support their colleagues in achieving the goals they set. Thus the EXCELth Workplace Wellness Program was established. After obtaining support and budget approval by EXCELth’s CEO, CFO and Medical Director, the EXCELth Workplace Wellness Program was official launched on March 12, 2010 at a general staff meeting.

The program focuses on holistic wellness and features week long activities highlighting one of the six health action areas. It utilizes the skills and expertise of clinical staff to provide health screenings, clinical consultations, self-management support and group sessions.  The program includes an evaluation component for continuous improvement and outcome achievement.

The first Workplace Wellness Program Group Session was held during the seventh week of Cycle 1, on Wednesday, April 28, 2010.  Below is a synopsis of the group meeting.

Group Session I - Meeting Report

We have successfully completed our first cycle of wellness activities! (Hand Clap)

We kicked off our Wellness Program with Physical Health week where staff was given a handout of various exercises that can be executed from a sitting position. The following week was Emotional Health week where staff was given daily recommendations of ways to improve the mood. Next was Diet and Nutrition week where staff was given a low calorie recipe for a delicious lunch salad which leads right into the next weeks’ activities for Healthy Weight and Physical Health. During these two weeks, staff was given information about maintaining a healthy diet, BMI calculators, and consultations were available as well. Staff was also given journals to bookmark their successes, barriers, and/or comments as they participate in the various activities henceforth. Lastly, the final week focused on Spiritual Health where staff was given uplifting messages daily and staff also gathered midweek for an afternoon prayer.

The first cycle of activities brought upon some positive changes and behavior modifications among staff. The Baton Rouge office collectively decided to have a healthy lunch at least one day a week. They have also established an ongoing goal to incorporate more physical activity during their lunch by opting to spend some of that time walking. A few other success stories shared were:

  • One staff member lost six pounds.
  • Several staff drank more water and became more conscious of their food choices.
  • One staff member became more consistent with taking their daily vitamins.
  • Several staff also felt that the office environment was more elated and pleasant.
  • All of the committee members have done a great job with their activities and are sure to outdo themselves during the next cycle.
